I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus and count them but rubbish.

Fear is a Good Thing

In the book of Isaiah chapter 6, the prophet Isaiah comes face to face with the living God in a vision.

Now none of us, that is  based on scripture’s view of visions, can rightfully say they have had that happen.

But there is a great lesson here to understand and learn. That is simply looking at how Isaiah responded. After the verse tells us what it is Isaiah is seeing the following words of horror come out of his mouth.

  • “WOE IS ME! WOE IS ME! For I am a man of unclean lips and am here with people who are unclean.”

Now what I find very interesting here is how he doesn’t say, “Hey, G-Man hows things up there?” Or “Yo big guy just doing the whole sacrifice thing so you just chill and enjoy the show.” Or even worse, “Oh God the love of my life oh how I miss you and call me, K?”

You know that is how we see God. We have lost this sense of fear. Now understand that fear can take a terrible reversal on us and cause problems. There are some people who are so afraid that they don’t even come out of their house at all. B/C after all if there was a rock that was to fall out of the sky on that day it would surely fall on their head. So some are so afraid of God they don’t ever approach him.

But we need to get back to the real fear of the Lord. We give other things in our lives fear why not God.

  • I have been working at Java Jo’z on Saturday mornings. I have to be there at 6:30 am. Not my usual getting up time. I live in fear that I might oversleep and let them down.
  • I had to deliver a really hard hitting sermon today. It was a good one and it needed to be heard but b/c it was a high pressure sermon and the job of minister is so important I was in fear of the outcome (still waiting on the results of that)

So issues of fear impact us all. So why not God. Part of the problem is we feel good about ourselves. Isaiah knew he was a sinner. He admited it. How many would admit they are full of sin. They are corrupted to God. Sickening more like. How many of us look at our sin and profess to God that we are in a tight spot here. Sure we have the forgiveness of sins in Jesus Christ, but we are also called to repent of those sins. Change and go in a different direction.

My challenge is that we would give God the awe that he deserves as we might our boss or jobs. Stop and understand the WOE IS ME, part of our relationship with God.
