I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus and count them but rubbish.

Fat Free Jesus

I have been working at a coffee shop for a few months now. It has been great. We sell many products that contain milk.

We provide a variety of milks. Whole, fat-free or even that now popular soy milk.

Each person gets to choose what it is they like or want. Now I know many understand that whole milk can add on the calories and the fat that some do not need. That is valid to an extent I am sure. But when I get out the fat-free milk to make a “skinny” drink I always think, “What are they getting?” Can’t be much to that stuff.

Really fat-free milk looks like someone cut the milk with a lot of water. Its so weak looking I almost want to ask the people at the window if they just want to have me use water. After all they are getting such a weak mixture they just as well not be using milk at all. B/C to me at first sight its not milk. It does make me think is it really milk at all. Should they bother with some milk if they don’t go ahead and get the real full milk? Are they missing out by not getting whole milk?

Well fortunately those are not life or death questions. If someone gets fat-free who cares. No big deal. Everyone is happy.

This led me to think, “I wonder if there is a real problem with people who want a “fat-free” Jesus.” You know just enough Jesus, but not too much b/c that would just be too much. So they take so little when it comes to their life in Jesus that you want to ask them if they would not rather give it up all together b/c they really are not getting that much anyway.

It is serious b/c when it comes to God the stakes are higher than milk. God does not call us to skim the stuff off the milk of scripture that we don’t want.

  • Don’t like that being a Christ follower is more than a prayer, well skim that stuff out of your life.
  •  Don’t like that God will judge us and will bring wrath to those lost b/c of His holiness, well skim that off.
  • Don’t like that evangelism is more than relational evangelism or social evangelism, well skim that off to.

God has commanded that we take Him whole or not at all.

Luke 9:23, Then he said to them all: “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.”

Some may think that fat-free Jesus will be just enough. God makes it clear that one day He will call to the mat those who have lived with a fat-free Jesus diet.

So please think hard about what you choose to diet on. Fat-free milk good, fat-free Jesus bad.

Take the whole scripture and use it.

  1. Thank you for the call out. I beleive this one of the major problems in the church. We forget that it is about following Jesus, and what he says, not abotu you being comfortable with your fat free luke warm milk.

  2. Thanks for taking the time to read it.
