I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus and count them but rubbish.

A Most Evil Smell

As I have mentioned many times before I work at a local coffee shop. It is a blast and I love being around coffee since its a drink I enjoy very much.

But something fooled me about being in the thick of the coffee shop life. Sometimes some of the sweetest things turn out to be not so sweet.

Whenever you work in any industry for which its focal product has an overpowering smell you soon begin to pick up those same smells in your clothes, hair, skin and even the oils produced in your skin can often smell like that very product. Now depending on the product you might not be so thrilled. After all if you are an employee in the horse industry and your job is to clean out the stalls everyday your general odor will be less than appealing.

Oh but coffee. Going to the coffee shop and being in touch with the smells of extracting coffee to make the perfect cup. Through out the air wafts this pleasant smell of coffee. What more could a guy ask for than to come home with the smells of the coffee shop still in your clothes and on your hands.?

Well a lot. See after being there so long I have began to discover that with the combination of hot steam in the air from the espresso machine, steamed milk, and general coffee smells all around that over time what one would think would be a nice coffee smell actually settles and by the end of a night your clothes actually smell like a wet dog. I am not sure if all of you are familiar with that, but many can understand what a wet musty dog smells like. Its rather repulsive. Forget reusing that same shirt again. No it must be washed and preferably that night as its smell can permeate all other outfits.

Many times in life we see those flashy things that we are sure will be for our benefit. We think they will produce a sweet effect that we might enjoy, but in the end it is a wet dog. Sin can get into our lives and eventually permeate our whole lives if we do not get on it and remove it. Sure it seemed sweet and appealing. Our carnal nature tells us its fun, but it only lasts for a few minutes and then your left with the stench of sin on you.

  • James 1:14-15 says, Each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.

Be careful and be alert to those things that seem nice and sweet but in the end lead to a most evil smell.
